The MJC will convene in Cape Town today to discuss the fiqh regarding the halaal certification of the newly opened Burger King franchise.
PAGAD has accused Hassan Adams, chairperson of Grand Parade Investments (GPI), of being of 'questionable morality' due to his company's stake in Grand West and casinos elsewhere in South Africa.
Gambling is forbidden in Islam and while Burger King may serve burgers that are halaal, the wealth that the franchise was purchased with originates from illicit sources which therefore makes the product of the wealth illegal for consumption by muslims.
This is the premise upon which PAGAD had based their call to the public to boycott the franchise. The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) will convene its fatwa committee today to discuss the legality of the franchise's halaal status in light of these claims.
